From an early age Pio La Torre had engaged in the struggle for farm workers, first in Confederterra, then in the CGIL (and became regional secretary) and, finally, joining the Communist Party Italian. In 1960 he entered the Central Committee of the PCI and in 1962 he was elected regional secretary of the party. In 1969 he moved to Rome to direct the first direction of the Agricultural Committee and then to the south. In 1972, elected member of parliament, are involved in agriculture. He played his greatest battle against the construction NATO missile base in Comiso, which he considered a threat to peace in the Mediterranean Sea and the Sicily itself. After nine years of investigations since his death in 1991, the judges closed the investigation in Palermo indicted nine members of the Cosa Nostra Mafia boss.
