April 30, 1982: 28 years ago Pio La Torre was killed by the Mafia

the morning of April 30, 1982, along with Rosario Di Salvo, Pio La Torre was reaching in the car section of his party, the PCI. The machine is joined by two big bikes: the masked men from the helmet and armed with pistols and machine guns fired dozens of shots at the two men.
From an early age Pio La Torre had engaged in the struggle for farm workers, first in Confederterra, then in the CGIL (and became regional secretary) and, finally, joining the Communist Party Italian. In 1960 he entered the Central Committee of the PCI and in 1962 he was elected regional secretary of the party. In 1969 he moved to Rome to direct the first direction of the Agricultural Committee and then to the south. In 1972, elected member of parliament, are involved in agriculture. Proposed the law that introduced the crime of mafia association, (Law Rognoni-La Torre) and a provision providing for the seizure of the mafia (a view eventually reached by Libera, who collected one million signatures in order to submit a proposal law, which took shape later in the Law 109/96).
In 1981 he returned to Sicily to take up the post of regional secretary of the party. He played his greatest battle against the construction NATO missile base in Comiso, which he considered a threat to peace in the Mediterranean Sea and the Sicily itself. To this end, he managed to collect one million signatures to petition the government.
But his efforts were directed also to the fight against speculation.

After nine years of investigations since his death in 1991, the judges closed the investigation in Palermo indicted nine members of the Cosa Nostra Mafia boss. Regarding the motive is made various assumptions, but none of them got actual evidence. In 1992, a turncoat, Leonardo Messina, revealed that Pio La Torre was killed on the orders of Toto Riina, boss of Corleone, because of his bill on the confiscation of assets of the mafia.
On 30 April 2007 was named Pio La Torre, the addition of center, the new airport at Comiso.
In August 2008, the new administration decided to remove the center-dedication to the Tower to return to the previous "General Magliocco, a fascist general during the colonial war in Ethiopia.
Perhaps one way to kill a second time? ...

Jewelry and tissues of different peoples, cultures and ethnicities, but generally from the countries of the Maghreb, are exposed in a small exhibition theme at a popular store in the city of Palermo and is always busy to bring jewelry and ethnic items of great and quality of ancient and complex history
This is a selection of items from my collection and now very rare or unavailable in local markets of the cities of North Africa.
Enamels of Kabylia, silver Atlas, Tuareg jewelry, antique Venetian murrine use in sub-Saharan Africa ... these and other gems woven together with some rituals originating in the inland areas of Tunisia, now obsolete but fascinating, are exposed for a month along with contemporary works inspired by them.

World Day Book: guided tours of the Public Library of Piazza Armerina

Two dates to celebrate the "World Book Day" promoted UNESCO. 22 and April 23 tours for high schools in the Biblioteca Comunale di Piazza Armerina.

Since 1996, the date of April 23 was chosen by UNESCO to raise awareness and promote reading and activities related to it, through the celebration of World Book Day. " The choice of this day is motivated by the fact that its April 23 marks the death of two great writers: William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.
The Department of Education's Square, led by Dr. Carlo Innocenzo, in consultation with the Director of the Library Dr. Angelo Apple and the library board meeting, an opportunity to organize and promote two days of guided tours of the Public Library for 22 and 23 April.

April 22, Dr. Eleanor Giampiccolo, any member of the library and Archaeology, will give students the remains of Greek and Roman times on display in the library and the importance of small antiquarium in ancient numismatics.

During the two-day visit to the Vice Chairman of the Library, Philip Acquachiara, knowledge of bibliographic resources, with particular reference to the old one kept in the library and historic documents from the city, will show students the importance of heritage library and archival and poet recite Pino Testa some of his poems in dialect.

The visits will be organized in rotation for the various schools according to specific schedule so that students can follow and appreciate fully the content shown.
